Warrior Trail System
A scenic, green-heavy system based in War, with Gary access and direct connections to three neighboring systems.
Warrior is the most beginner-friendly system in this batch by its live official mix. More than half is green, and another third is blue, making it a practical family and scenic-riding base—while the connected network still gives experienced groups room to build longer days.

What the Trail Mix Means
Green — 52%
The largest easy share in this batch; useful for introductions and conservative family loops.
Blue — 34%
Adds grades, rock, ruts, and mud without making technical terrain the center of every day.
Black — 8%
Optional difficult branches for confident riders with appropriate protection and recovery gear.
Double-black — 3%
Small but serious extreme mileage; avoid using it as a required return.
The live official page lists 3% motorcycle-only single-track. Warrior is not open to full-size ORVs.
Terrain and Riding Character
- Scenery: Numerous official scenic views make Warrior a strong relaxed-riding choice.
- Moderate terrain: Green and blue routes still include Appalachian grades, rock, ruts, and mud.
- Hard options: Black and double-black branches add challenge without dominating the system.
- Town access: War and Gary provide practical food, fuel, and lodging stops.
- Flexibility: Short local routes can grow into a full-day connected-system ride.
Who Warrior Fits Best
| Rider | Fit | Planning approach |
|---|---|---|
| Beginners | Excellent with map discipline | Start on green and preserve the same-color return. |
| Mixed-skill families | Excellent | Use green and blue with War or Gary as a bailout. |
| Scenic riders | Excellent | Build the day around overlooks and town access. |
| Technical riders | Good | Add marked hard spurs or connect into Indian Ridge and Pocahontas. |
Machine Trip Notes
Warrior supports SxS/UTVs, ATVs, and dirt bikes at the system level. Full-size ORVs are not supported here; Hatfield-McCoy’s current ORV rule limits them to Bearwallow, Cabwaylingo, and Ivy Branch. The official system page lists single track as 3%; that is not SxS mileage. Warrior connects with Pinnacle Creek, Indian Ridge, and Pocahontas, so agree on the group’s route and turnaround plan before riding beyond the local system. Use the current official map and obey posted signs, closures, direction, and vehicle restrictions. System-level eligibility does not open every route.

Best Home-Base Towns
War: direct trailhead base
The staffed trailhead is in War, with direct food, fuel, and lodging access.
- Best tradeoff: simplest morning logistics and beginner orientation.
- Local lodging inventory is limited; verify trailer parking directly.
Gary: alternate connector base
Gary provides another official town connector and can shorten some connected-network plans.
- Tradeoff: useful eastern access; confirm the signed route and current local services.
- Do not assume every town street is an approved connector.
Bluefield/Bramwell area: service depth
A larger service base can work for groups combining Warrior with Pocahontas and Indian Ridge.
- Tradeoff: broader conventional lodging and supplies; plan to trailer or ride a longer connector.
- Browse the existing HMT lodging directory while southeastern coverage expands.
Browse the complete Hatfield-McCoy lodging directory for additional cabins, houses, motels, RV sites, and campgrounds.
Pet-Friendly Lodging
No nearby property is labeled pet-friendly because a current, unit-specific policy was not directly verified. Confirm fees, limits, deposits, and unattended-pet rules before booking.
Food, Fuel, Rentals, Repairs, Parking, and Trailhead
- The official War trailhead has a 2+ acre parking area, staff, restrooms, permits, and merchandise.
- War and Gary offer direct food, fuel, and lodging access; verify hours in advance.
- Official listings include CoalTown Adventures and other independent rental or lodging providers in the broader network. Confirm repairs, delivery, and recovery coverage directly.
- Use designated lots and obtain permission before overnight trailer parking.
Map-Based Ride Planning Suggestions
1. War beginner orientation
Sequence: Trailhead → Trail 29 → Trail 25 junction → reverse
A conservative green-focused start with easy bailouts. Confirm trail colors and direction on the current map.
2. Scenic green/blue loop study
Sequence: 29 → 25 → 32 → signed green return toward War
A family-oriented route concept with moderate terrain. Allow time for views and keep War as the primary bailout.
3. Gary or connected-system day
Sequence: Warrior mainline → current signed Gary connector or one neighboring-system connector → reverse
Choose one objective. Do not combine Gary plus multiple systems without enough fuel, daylight, and offline navigation.
Nearby Systems to Combine with Warrior
Warrior connects to Pinnacle Creek, Indian Ridge, and Pocahontas. Indian Ridge supplies more technical depth; Pinnacle Creek and Pocahontas add different town bases.
Road Access and Local Rules

- Hatfield-McCoy rules: A current permit is required; helmets and protective eyewear are required; obey posted signs, trail direction, hours, and machine restrictions.
- West Virginia law: State law governs operation on public roads and contains limited exceptions. It does not make every road or every machine street-legal.
- Local access: Use only signed community connectors and roads authorized by the applicable town or county. Boundaries, routes, and hours can differ by municipality.
- No blanket promise: Confirm the current trail map, posted connector signs, and local requirements before entering pavement.
