Bringing Your Own SxS to Hatfield-McCoy Trails

BRING YOUR OWN MACHINE

Your machine is already part of the trip plan. Check the machine as it is configured today, then match the plan to current official maps, signs, closures, direction, and vehicle restrictions.

Quick Machine Check

Record the machine as it is configured today. These notes create planning questions; they do not establish route compatibility.

  • ☐ Actual configured width: ____________________
  • ☐ Factory seat count: ____________________
  • ☐ Tire size and current tire condition: ____________________
  • ☐ Fuel capacity and expected riding range: ____________________
  • ☐ Cargo and spare capacity: ____________________
  • ☐ Recovery equipment carried: ____________________
  • ☐ Major accessories or modifications affecting size or load: ____________________

Before You Pick a Trail

Start with your riding group, passengers, planned day, lodging base, fuel plan, and recovery plan. Then review the current official trail-system information. A machine that is eligible at the system level may not be allowed on every route.

Use the current official map and obey posted signs, closures, direction, and vehicle restrictions. System-level eligibility does not open every route.

Check Your Actual Machine — Not Just the Brochure

Record the machine’s real configured width, wheelbase, tire size, accessories, passengers, cargo, fuel load, and protective equipment. Modifications may change stock dimensions and handling.

Width, Wheels, Tires and Modifications

Measure or confirm actual width at the widest configured point. Note wheel and tire changes, spacers, portals, bumpers, racks, mirrors, and other additions. Do not assume a brochure dimension controls an altered machine.

Wheelbase and Maneuvering

Wheelbase, steering feel, turning circle, load, and terrain can affect how easily the machine negotiates turns and obstacles. These facts do not prove that a specific route is suitable.

Passengers and Factory Seating

Plan around the factory seating configuration and the people actually riding. Do not treat a machine as a four-seat substitute because a passenger can physically fit somewhere else.

Fuel and Range Planning

Use the owner’s manual and your own riding history. Terrain, load, weather, idling, speed, tire choice, and group pace can change real-world range.

Cargo and Load

Secure water, food, tools, recovery gear, clothing, and emergency supplies. Stay within the owner’s manual limits and keep heavy items low and secured.

Recovery and Spare Equipment

Plan for tire damage, a dead battery, belt or driveline trouble where applicable, mud, weather, and a disabled machine. Carry equipment appropriate to your machine and group.

Trailer / Tow / Parking Considerations

Confirm your trailer, tie-downs, tow vehicle, parking arrangement, and lodging rules before departure. Do not assume trailer parking, machine parking, or road connectors are available.

Group Compatibility

Discuss seat count, pace, fuel stops, comfort, machine width, communication, and recovery ability with the whole group. The group plan should account for the least-prepared machine without guessing route access.

Final Pre-Trip Machine Check

  • Owner-manual checks completed
  • Actual dimensions and modifications recorded
  • Tires, fluids, brakes, battery, cooling, and driveline checked
  • Fuel, maps, permits, helmets, water, tools, and recovery gear planned
  • Route, weather, daylight, communication, and return plan discussed
